April 1, 2020 -- UPDATED ANNOUNCEMENT:

Dear Parents and Students,

This afternoon, Governor Brian Kemp issued an executive order closing all Georgia schools for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.  Long County School System will remain closed in compliance with this order.

To the Class of 2020, I want you to know we are heartbroken and dismayed over this abrupt end to your senior year.  We are proud of your accomplishments, and we will be working on plans to celebrate and honor you.  The Long County Board of Education, your family, friends, and community will join together to celebrate and recognize this monumental milestone in your life.

To all Long County Students and Parents, I know you all have many questions and concerns on how the school year ended and what lies ahead.  Rest assured our administration and faculty are working on plans to address standards and material students have missed due to the school closure.  Next week is our scheduled Spring Break.  I encourage students to take the time to rest, relax, and enjoy their week.  We will have more information on distance learning plans in the days ahead.

Sincerely,
David Edwards
Superintendent

FAQ for Long County Schools COVID-19 Response ***Updated 3/16/2020***

Here are some frequently-asked-questions. This post will be updated as new questions arise.

1. Why did the system decide to close effective March 16?
A:  Due to the fluid situation and rapidly changing factors, we have elected to close Long County Schools for two weeks, from March 16 through March 27, for all students.
While we believe it is important to keep schools open for learning, we do not want to unnecessarily put our students, staff, and community at risk as our state and community face the uncertainty of the COVID-19 virus.

2. Will students have to make this time up?
A: That is a decision the Georgia Department of Education will have to make. While we do not have a definitive answer at this time, indications point to students NOT having to make up missed school days. As soon as we have a clear answer on this, we will share it with the community.

3. Will we still have Prom?
A:   Prom has been tentatively rescheduled for May 2.

4. Will my child continue learning during the break?
A: District and school leaders will be meeting on Tuesday to work on Distance Learning materials  and procedures.  We will release more information on Tuesday afternoon.

5. When will my child receive a report card?
A: Students will receive report cards when we return from the break.

6. Will we have Spring Break April 6-10?
A:  Yes, Long County Schools will be out for Spring Break April 6-10.

7. Will school resume on March 30?
A. It is too early to make a decision at this time.  We hope to know more by March 27.

8. How do I get my child’s medication from the school nurse?
A. On Tuesday, we will announce a day and time for parents to pick up medication from the school nurse.  If you should need medicine on Tuesday, please contact the school office on Tuesday morning.

9. What about students who rely on school nutrition services?
A. We are working with our Nutrition Department and Transportation Department on a plan to do Meals-to-go.  More information will be released on Tuesday afternoon.

10. Are the Ga Milestones/EOG/exams being waived?
A. State Superintendent Woods announced suspension of Ga Milestones Testing.  This recommendation and waivers will be presented to the State Board of Education at the March 27 meeting.

11. Will the kids get a refund if Senior bash night is cancelled????
A.  At this time, Grad Bash is still scheduled.  We are closely monitoring the situation.  We have reached out to the companies concerning refunds should the event be cancelled.

12. What about Dual Enrollment?
A. Coastal Pines—-face-to-face classes are suspended for 2 weeks while on- line classes are continuing. Please check your college email and blackboard accounts for more information. Also, check Coastal Pines website for additional information.

13.  Will Middle School sports resume?

A.  No
On behalf of the  Southeast GA Middle School Athletic Conference, the remainder of the 2020 spring sports season has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 virus. All of our schools are on different timelines as far as being out of school and there are so many unknown answers beyond our control. The season is officially over starting Monday, March 16, 2020.

14.  Will High School sports resume?
A.  The current thoughts are to play a modified season once school resumes.  Please note this is subject to change.
